The original clay maquette for the Freedom public sculpture has been cast in bronze and is now available for purchase. Some museums, such as the Museo dei Bozzetti in Pietrasanta, Italy, exhibit only maquettes. Therefore maquettes are sought by museums and collectors. Such insights are valuable because maquettes can show how an artistic idea developed into the final sculpture. This sculptural sketch illustrates the creative process and conceptual approach of the artist. While maquettes may appear rougher than the finished life size bronze, they carry the essence and emotion of the completed sculpture. (This maquette was ultimately integrated into the final sculpture, appearing in the lower left corner.) Freedom's original clay maquette was used to show clients at GSK World Headquarters how the final sculpture would look and integrate with its surroundings. With monumental public sculptures, such as the Freedom bronze installed in Philadelphia, maquettes can be important tools of communication with clients. Artists create maquettes to visualize the composition, testing the juxtaposition and interplay of shapes.
